Family Dinner Etiquette

Hello everyone!  A very warm welcome to you all.  Happy Valentine's Day!  The video I have selected for this post is a 2 minute clip entitled "Family dinner Etiquette (1950)".  Enjoy!

As I watched this video it brought back some great memories from days gone by for me.  Do you think that dinner time is the same now as it was back then?  Have many people forgotten their manners today, or are we as polite and courteous today as our parents and grandparents were back in the day?

Thank you all so much for visiting me here!  I always appreciate and enjoy reading your kind thoughts, which you are always welcome to share.

  3. This is really a great video, reminds me of our early family holiday meals at Christmas and Easter. Everyone was dressed in their best outfit! Now you're lucky if you can get people to show up in a clean sweatshirt!

  7. I grew up in the 50s and 60s and I'll never forget having dinner with a girlfriend. They had classical music playing in the background....that seemed so elegant and formal. We eat off trays most of the time. Time have changed for sure! Sweet hugs!

  9. That video is certainly about my childhood meals. We still eat supper as a family, which many of my grandchildren s' contemporaries do not, but our casual dress changes the atmosphere from that in the video.

  10. We've definitely lost some of the graciousness of those days. It was a fun look back.

  11. I do think things have changed. Lots of families don't sit down together to eat anymore. I think eating together can be so helpful to creating bonds together.

I would love a piece of cake they had for dessert! :-)

  15. I still get to enjoy large family dinners (as a guest occasionally) where everyone is polite and the dinner is a great time of togetherness. But everyone sitting down at the same time on a regular basis is I think more an event of the past. Funny video.

  17. No unfortunately dinner time is most certainly not the same now. People never eat at the table anymore. They eat in front of the TV!!

  18. We as a family always sat together and I'm proud to say my daughters have continued the tradition. There's still hope for humanity Linda.

  20. Meals like about everything else seem less somehow then they used to be. We on occasion have fondue...it is fun and brings us all to the table.

  21. A gem of a video. I love those occasions (which aren't as often as I would like) when our family is sat around the table. Wonderful. The kids have a break from their computers and phones...lovely for us all.

  22. Happy Valentine's Day, Linda! What a great and varied selection of videos and photos you have posted during the last week. Today's video was so idealistic! We tried to have those kind of family dinners on Sundays when I was growing up, and manners were required at every meal, but those days are gone, for sure! I still love family dinners though, even if they are less proper! Have a happy weekend!

  27. This reminded me of the instructional videos we used to watch in school assemblies on the reel-to-reel movies.

  28. No, I don't think dinner time is the same as it once was. For some yes, but most don't eat together anymore. I think some people don't even know what the word manners mean!!!

  29. Sure different than most family dinners now :)

  30. I think manners have changed. Many don't worry about them. That is a shame. We were strict with our kids, and our grandkids are similarly being taught well!
