Vintage Watches

For those of us who grew up in the 1960's or earlier, we will remember the dreaded wind up watches.  If you forgot to wind up your watch, you wouldn't know what time it was.  It was as simple as that.


My fondest memories are of the Timex watches.  They had a large selection of watches, and they worked very well.  I remember a vintage TV ad for Timex that went like this.  "Timex...it takes a licking and keeps on ticking!"  In the ad, as I recall, a man, wearing a Timex watch, jumped from a cliff into the water.  


I found a couple of vintage (1960's) ads for Timex watches which I will share with you all.  This was when they were introducing the electronic watch.  Interestingly enough, and unlike other things today as compared to days gone by, these watches are actually more expensive than some we find today!  The price was between $40 and $50 in the 1960's.

    I still have a number of these watches (not Timex). And they still work. My experience with Timex was the opposite of yours. I could never get them to work. Very frustrating and I finally gave up and never bought another Timex! ;-)

      Hi Lowell,

      I put up the Timex ads because my memories of them are the most vivid. Now that you mentioned your experience with them, though, it made me think of the Cardinal watches. Thanks so much for your comment. :)

    In our town the standard gift for 8th grade graduation was a watch. It was always a Timex watch too. I still wear a watch, but I usually pull out my phone to check the time . . . . . bigger numbers for older eyes to read! LOL

    i have a watch fetish!! as most girls have for shoes..i also collect watches.. all kinds.. but i remember my very first in jr high was a timex..with an elastic band that fit perfectly my small wrists and it was completely water proof. I use to go swimming, shower and never take it off and it still worked. I have bought them over the years still for they are the only brand that still offers a water resistant & elastic band. but yes i remember forgetting to wind mine up a few times..lol
