Some of my Photos

I bought a small Kodak digital camera two years ago.  Unlike some of you, I am not what one would consider a really good photographer.  When I first got the camera, many of my photos turned out horribly.  I knew why...I was a bit nervous and moved slightly when I was taking the photos, therefore they came out blurry.  However, I was determined to take better photos without the use of a tripod.

My photos do turn out much better now than they did when I first began taking photos.  I didn't realize how much I would enjoy taking photos, but I really do.  I thought I would share some of my photos and hope you all enjoy them.  I don't do anything to them in the way of "touch ups"...all my photos are just as I took them...as I call it "au naturel."  :)  The reason I say this is because someone asked me one day if I touch up my photos.

I love ducks and sunsets...so here is one I took at a park;  ducks at sunset.

This next photo is of the Chinese Gardens...here at Montreal's Botanical Gardens.  It is such a beautiful, relaxing place!

I took this next photo about a month after I got my camera...so almost two years ago.  This was after I got the knack of using my camera without moving my hand.  LOL!  This was also before I learned to use the "zoom in" feature, so you can see how close the geese were to me...somehow, they realized that I was there to appreciate them and not harm them.

This last photo is one that I just loved the colours. I was taking a walk one day and came across these beautiful flowers...so I couldn't resist capturing the scene with my lens.

Thanks so much for stopping by, and please feel free to share your thoughts by clicking on the "comments" link at the end of my post.

  4. Well, Ms. Linda, you are doing just fine! Your pictures are sharp, well-composed, colorful, and full of interest.

Some people think that pictures "right out of the camera" are somehow "better" than those that have been "fixed." Not so. And not even close to reality. It's the digital thing that makes them think that way. Not long ago, I used film cameras. I developed all my own film. The developing was a process which could be used to manipulate the film. Then I processed and printed all of my pictures. I spent hours in the darkroom getting the colors right, cropping, dodging and burning, sharpening, etc.

Ansel Adams, the dean of black and white, spent days working on a single photo!

Today, the digital camera you use does much of that work en camera before you even see the photo. It's instantaneous. The better the camera that better it can "fix" the pictures. Most photos, however, can use a color adjustment and some sharpening and additional contrast, no matter how good the camera. That's where a program like Photoshop comes in.

I see photography as an art. You are not capturing "reality" with your camera, you are capturing what you see at a particular moment. Another photographer shooting the same scene would see it differently. Maybe much differently. You may both be shooting a particular scene but you'd have different views of it. Furthermore, the second after you press the "shutter" button, the scene has changed. It's not what it was when you took the picture. So your picture has captured something that is no longer "reality."

I see photography as an art form. You look through a viewfinder and compose YOUR picture...you can manipulate your camera to change how it appears and the camera will adjust it when it snaps the picture. Then you can use a photo-processing program and manipulate it in many other ways.

Check the Images blog. The picture of the wine glasses was originally in color, and included portions of the restaurant that I didn't want in the picture so I cropped them out. It was a bit fuzzy so I sharpened it. I then changed the color to black and white and used another program called "Midnight" to give it a kind of eerie look. I added a frame. The original photo coming out of the camera was merely a picture which the camera had "fixed" a little bit. What I've got now is a work of art. Whether it's a good work of art is a matter of opinion but I like it and as far as I'm concerned that's all that matters.

Hope this all makes sense to you. In other words, do what you want with your camera. Don't listen to other people unless they can accept what your doing and have suggestions to help you become an even better photographer. Create your own art, Linda's art!

  5. Oops! I said the wineglasses photo was on the Images blog. That's where I intended initially to put it. Actually, it's on the Ocala blog! Sorry!

  7. Your photos are great - I have an old Kodak that I bought 12 years ago and it has gone everywhere. It is still my favourite camera, but now i see that they are getting out of the digital camera business.

  9. An interesting blog. The Japanese garden is a beautiful place. Indeed in this space must be well relax. Plants and buildings give a person a sense of harmony. I read about your beginnings photography. Such beginnings .... I also spent I had my first Russian-built camera, if not a great choice. The false light coming through the camera and father always blamed me that I have a finger in the lens. It took a long time before he came to a defect in the camera. Sincerely, Peter.
