The State of Maine, U.S.A.

When I was a little girl (about 8 or 9 years old), my big cousin and his mom took my mother and I to the U.S.  We drove from Montreal and went to Atlantic City, New Jersey and Old Orchard Beach in Maine.  Of course, being a little girl (even as a big girl and grown up woman I still love the ocean), I really enjoyed Old Orchard Beach!

I am not sure if any of you are familiar with the state of Maine...and Old Orchard Beach, especially, but at that time (which would have been 1965, I think), we stayed at a beautiful bed and breakfast called "Mermaid by the Sea."  I have tried to find out what happened to this place...but unfortunately anyone I have written or spoken to has no clue.  I had heard that there was a fire at Old Orchard Beach in the late 60's...my guess is that the fire might have destroyed the "Mermaid by the Sea" inn, which is why nobody seems to know what happened to it.

I have been to the U.S...New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.  My favourites were Vermont and Maine, hence this post on the State of Maine.

I found some photos of Maine on the web and thought I would share them with you all and hope you enjoy them.

Old Orchard Beach...

Brunswick...

Biddeford...

A postcard/map with Maine's "The Pinetree State" on it.

Thank you all so much for stopping by!  If any of you know of and/or remember the "Mermaid by the Sea" bed and breakfast at Old Orchard Beach from the 1960's, please share your memories or knowledge.  I really look forward to your responses and thoughts, and appreciate it.  Please click on the "comments" link at the end of my post to share.

  1. I have always wanted to go to New England. My son and his family drove through Maine and Boston for their vacation last year and loved it.

  3. I loved my trips to Maine and once surprised a new bank manager. I asked where he was from. He said Bangor, Maine. I said I've been there twice. He knew the owners of the restaraunt where we ate.

  4. Glad you like Maine. I have been here 17 years and think myself lucky to live in such a beautiful place. I do a lot of hiking with my dog so we get to enjoy lots of the natural beauty. I have not been to Montreal but perhaps.. what is the policy about bringing dogs into your country?

    1. Hi John,

Thanks for your comment. To be honest I am not certain about the policies of bringing an animal into Canada. However, I would think that it shouldn't be too hard, as you would be coming from the U.S. It might be good to have a veterinarian's paper showing that the dog is in good health; it certainly can't hurt. Other than that I don't see a problem, but please check first just to be sure. Montreal is a fine city with much to see and do.

  8. I visited Maine many years ago (in 1967), but I definitely wasn't a child. We visited Bar Harbor, instead of Old Orchard Beach, but I do have many happy memories of Maine. I would like to get back there again.
