A Journey Back in Time

All these photos are from the shorpy.com website.
In this first photo, I don't have anymore info on it, as, although it is from Shorpy's website, this is not where I found this particular photo.

There is something about the atmosphere of this diner that I just love!  I really like the curved tables.  Hamburgers were just 12 cents then.

Happy News Cafe 1937, Washington, D.C. (exterior) Elder Michaux for United Mine Workers Fund.  Happy News Cafe, 1727 7th Street.  Harris & Ewing glass negative.

Happy News Cafe, 1937.  (interior) The rest of the information for this photo is exactly the same at the photo of the exterior of this cafe above.  I was interested in seeing the "No smoking" sign in this cafe as early as 1937.  Although I am very happy to see the sign, being a non-smoker, I just didn't realize that these signs could be found back in the 1930's.

Thank you all so much for visiting me here.  I hope you have all enjoyed this journey back in time thanks to the shorpy.com website.  I always enjoy reading your thoughts, which you can always share by clicking on the 'comments' link at the end of my post.

  1. We could still use the 12 cent hamburgers, though not the segregation.

  3. I miss the classic look. One restaurant around here has the 50's look still intact. It's like walking into back to the future

  4. These are priceless! Esp. that last one which is a poignant portrayal of Jim Crow in action!

  5. When I was a kid back in the 40's, there was a cafe in my hometown setup like the Shorpy's layout. It was called the Gobbler Cafe because the town called itself the Turkey Capital of the World. We had a big Turkey Days celebration every fall. We got out of school for the parade and carnival held in downtown.

  9. I can remember eating in a restaurant with the curved counters, but I can't remember just where. It may have been what we always referred to as a "soda fountain" in the lower level of a large department store. Anyway, this brought back memories.

I love old diners! Especially the ones in the little silver trains!
