A Trip Back in Time

Hi everyone!  Not sure if any of you remember this, but back in the 1960's, when my parents purchased laundry detergent, there was usually a free item inside the box.  This could be a towel, toy or something else.  I do remember the towels, and I think the name of the brands that offered a free towel were Duz and Breeze, if I recall accurately.  Please feel free to share your childhood memories:  your favourite toys and activities.

The video I have chosen for this post is a one minute vintage Ivory Snow TV commercial.

The photo I have chosen for this post is one I took in the summer of 2010...at a greenhouse.  It is a place where you can, for free, go to visit and enjoy all the flowers and plants, fountains and there are even tables with chairs and benches, where you can sit and relax and perhaps even bring a lunch.
You just need to click on the image to see a larger view.

Thank you all so much for visiting me here!  I really appreciate and enjoy reading your kind thoughts, which you are always welcome to share by clicking on the 'comments' link at the end of my post.

  2. Hello, Linda, I like your picture a lot and the plants too. I'm afraid I saw a documentary on similar decorative plants that have come into European homes from South American forests and that are extremely poisonous for human people. Have you heard anything about that. Anyway we should be careful and avoid touching them.

    Greetings,
    Santi

  3. When staying with friends' families there would be a toy of some sort in every new box of cereal...but at home we did not eat box cereals....just porage, and nothing came free with that!

  10. The plants are beautiful!!! And YES, I remember these gifts! How about when you got gas, they would run out to clean your window and you would always get a beautiful glass or steak knife. After a few tankfuls, you would have a whole set. Still have some. I think Cracker Jack still has a toy inside...

    1. Hi Ginny, thank you so much, so glad you liked my photo. As far as the gas goes, my parents never had a car, but my friend's parents did, as well as my uncles, and I remember the glasses! Yes, Cracker Jack still has a toy inside, but the cost of Cracker Jack has gone up so much! It was either 5 cents or 10 cents back then!

  11. Moją ulubioną zabawką był a śpiaca lalka. Uwielbiam miejsca, gdzie można ogladać rośliny. Dziękuję za odwiedziny i zapraszam do zagladania do mnie. Odwdzięczę się rewizytą. Pozdrawiam.
My favorite toy was a doll sleeping. I love the place where you can watch the plants. Thank you for visiting and invite you to visit me. Repay a return visit. Yours.

  13. I don't remember the gifts in detergents but I remember the gifts inside cereal boxes so my sister and I always used to have a bit of a scrap over who would open the box! PS I love your image of the plants, beautiful coloured leaves. Have a nice weekend. /Niki

  14. I too remember the gifts in detergent. Seems like one of the companies gave out juice glasses with rainbow stripes?? And movie theaters as well as groceries would give out china pieces - so that if you went regularly, you could collect a whole set.

Your video also reminded me that it's hard to find baby diaper pins anymore. I was looking for one recently to use (not for a diaper) and couldn't find any at the stores. Guess with the disposable diapers, people don't use them anymore?

    1. Hi Rian, thanks so much for sharing your memories. As far as baby diaper pins go, you might be able to find some at a dollar store. Not sure about your area, but I often see things in dollar stores here that I thought were no longer available.

  16. I believe I do remember the towels, but not toys. And I don't remember the brands. But I was busy with other things and not washing clothes. :)

Those plants in your second photo...can't remember the name but they come in both red and white versions and we had many of them growing in our yard in our old house in Ocala...they returned every year and spread rapidly. Love 'em!

  24. I remember Ivory Snow, but not the toy or gift. I wonder if they stopped including one in later. Old commercials are fun to watch and reminisce. Your greenhouse sounds like a lovely place to visit and stay for awhile.

  25. I remember dishes with a wheat pattern & gold rims in laundry detergent, & another detergent that offered glasses. Tide had plastic drinking cups that were the right size for a three year old child to easily manage. My friends mother had a set of those that we used to drink Koolaid!

  26. I remember those soaps and gifts! Beautiful flowers - - - and the baby in the video, too.
