A Blast from the Past

Hello everyone!  A very warm welcome to you all!  In my last post I talked about the fact that I struggle with depression (not suffer from it, but struggle with it) and have for years now.  In addition to this, I am a highly sensitive person (HSP).  Being a highly sensitive person can be a good thing in that I am able to empathize with others and their pain due to my sensitivity.  It also means that being very sensitive I can be easily hurt.  However, I am trying not to be so easily hurt, but it isn't easy.  LOL!  :)

Happy 4th of July to all my U.S. friends and readers!

The video I have chosen for this post is a great blast from the past!  It is a short, two minute clip that I just love...and hope that you will all enjoy it as well!  "Back in the day" such as in the 60's and earlier, pharmacies/drugstores had a soda fountain, and it was a great place to get a healthy, tasty meal or just a coffee, milkshake or sundae.  The service was friendly and personable, unlike most stores of today!  I am finding that pharmacies of today (at least many of them) are resembling the "big box" outlets of today and I really find that the good, old fashioned, polite and friendly customer service is seriously lacking in a good majority of the stores.  I find this sad, and, having worked in retail myself for many years, I really believe that the lack of good customer service is causing many stores to close down!

The photos I am sharing today are ones that I took on a nature park walk.  You just need to click on the images to see a larger view.

  1. true, it's difficult to strike a balance between being vulnerable and being steel-hearted/thick-skinned. i try not to let myself become too easily hurt, but sometimes it's just impossible. but the hurt always subsides after some time, thankfully =)

  4. When I was really small, there was still a soda fountain at our neighborhood drug store. I loved it, and was disappointed when they took it out.

You're right about retail skills....small shops and locally owned bigger ones here are great - but two big chains will not be getting my custom any more because their service was diabolical.

  6. I worked in our neighborhood soda fountain inside our drugstore when I was around 16. Our fountains did not have soda dispensers that automatically mixed the syrup and seltzer. We had to put in the syrup and then add the seltzer. Ice cream was served in the paper cone-shaped inserts that sat in the metal holder.
Fortunately for us in our city, there are still some locally owned pharmacies. We use one of those. They know us there and treat us like family.

Yes, customer service is seriously lacking in some stores. Everything has gotten so big and distant.

  14. Soda fountains and personal service are missed, I agree. Anne Lamotte once wrote in one of her books that she is "clinically sensitive" (that may not be the right phrase) and I thought, hey, that fits me too. There are many people in that boat, one refreshing thing is time alone. Love your photos of the fish swimming, they look cool.

  15. merci pour la vidéo intéressante, je n'ai jamais connu de fontaine à soda, mais je comprends les services sont moins personnalisés dans les magasins. Merci Linda pour les photos, j'aime les animaux.

  16. I am lucky that we have an old-fashioned malt shop in my area. I love to take my grandkids there for burgers and fries and malts.

  18. I believe we have one in the city that is pretty close to this one you posted.
Linda, you are smart to be blogging and having your eyes wide open to what is around you meeting lots of people and hearing lots of stories. Keeps you focused on other things than yourself.Great photos here!

There's a quote from a Leonard Cohen song I've always loved: "There is a crack in everything; that's how the light gets in." Challenges like depression are often the "cracks" through which the light of compassion can shine through. I appreciate you, Linda, and your open and honest heart. I like the photo of the turtle peeking up through the water at you.
