Quebec's Language Police are at it Again

Hello everyone!  A very warm welcome to you all!  The video I have selected for this post is a beautiful, soothing clip entitled "Moonlight Lake" (therapeutic spa music). Enjoy!

Those of you who are regular visitors to my blog will know that I don't often post things about politics or any negative events, but I felt the need to post this!  I watched the local Montreal news tonight on CTV and was royally annoyed by this story, which I am sharing the link to!

So much of this has been going on where the OQLF (Office de la Langue Francaise, Quebec's "Language Police"), have targeted businesses in regards to the lack of, or not enough of, the French language in their businesses.  This particular story, however, which I have provided the link to above, is the first where they have actually gone after a business in reference to their Facebook page!  Sigh!  Please feel free to share your thoughts on this story.

Many people including myself are sick of all this (including a good number of French speaking people).  I am fluent in French and have no issue with communicating in French; however, nobody likes to be forced to do so, and nobody likes to be made to feel like a second class citizen if they speak in English.

The photo I am sharing today is one that I took a few years ago.  You just need to click on the image to see a larger view.

Thank you all so much for visiting me here!  I always appreciate and enjoy reading your kind thoughts, which you are always welcome to share.

  2. lovely flowers, look like Pelagoniums. I have supported the lovely lady, ( left her a message on FB) is she being singled out as a precedent, and why should she have to publish in French, or 2 languages, I have blog friends who publish in their own language, I use Bing Translate, and they comment to me in English. I hope everyone backs up the protest against this happening. Thanks so much Linda, we all need to know about this. Hugs, Jean.

  3. Seems to me they are crossing boundaries ....So many know it alls in the world trying to tell people what to do. BOO

  4. Sounds a little silly to me to force someone to post in both languages. If someone doesn't like that she is using only English then they should "unlike" her Facebook page. I think I might go like her page just because of this!

  5. That seems ridiculous!! I guess governments all over the world are trying to tell its citizens what to do!

  6. Well, I'm neither Canadian nor from Quebec, so I'm hesitant to criticize their policies. But I wouldn't like it. On the other hand, your photo is very pretty.

  7. I've seen the story here in the newspapers. It's frustrating, to say the least, and completely counterproductive by the language police.

They're only harming future prospects for the province by being so zealous... and it doesn't matter who's actually governing the province, those language statutes are too well entrenched.

  9. language disputes do tend to get very emotional. in malaysia, there are efforts to push the malay language over english, especially in the teaching of subjects in schools, and there are people on both sides who support and oppose such things...

  10. In America we have a bit of the opposite. A lot of racist people freak out that many places now offer many alternative readings of stuff in Spanish.

  11. First of all to know you have a language agency is mindboggling to me. :)
Adam above me here has touched on a big problem here in America. It's sad people just can't live together.
The music and the flowers were very nice Linda. I'm glad you started and ended your post with serenity. We all need more of it. :)

  12. musique"cool" et fleurs de printemps, what else ??
en France beaucoup se plaignent de trop utiliser les mots anglais ! why not ?
quelle importance, l'essentiel est de se comprendre non ?

I have read about the language policy years ago, but I did not know that it is so strict.

  15. I was going to comment on what goes on in America related to Spanish vs. English, but Adam beat me to it. Your photograph of the flowers is very pretty. I am looking forward to Springtime blooms!

  16. My goodness, I have been educated by your post of Police and language.

    Like you photo.

  17. Lovely video and picture Linda.
The French are very funny when it comes to language. They're terrified of their language being corrupted. Whenever an Anglicized word becomes too popular they get a team of experts to invent a French word for it.
'World Speak' in a form of English is inevitable, even the Chinese are in a hurry to learn it.

  21. Being American I can testify on how being "PC" ruins everything. Lots of legislating things with clever names and screaming at one another but no dialogue or intelligent governing.

  25. Oh dear seems like a worldwide problem.

I would have thought that as it was a social website not a political/business one it should be up to the individual. Heigh ho, it keeps people in a job even if it's a daft one.
