Monday Shares & More about Myself

Hello everyone!  A very warm welcome to you all!

I used to eat and enjoy beef, but it caused me to have several attacks of gout over the years.  Last July, when I was stricken with the bacterial infection known as "C Difficile", my appetite changed dramatically.  I lost about 9 lbs. and was sick for the entire month of July.  I had already been somewhat (but not completely) turned off of beef in 2012, but since last July I haven't had the taste for beef, and even the look or smell of it turns me off completely. So I haven't eaten it for many months and actually haven't missed it, to be honest. Oh, and in case any of you are wondering, it wasn't beef that caused the diverticulitis or the C Difficile. I did, however, have gout attacks that I am pretty sure that beef, if not the cause of them, certainly contributed to them. I am wondering if any of you have had a similar experience with any foods.  I have noticed, as well, since the summer of 2012, after a serious (and, thankfully, first and only), bout with diverticulitis, my sense of smell is much stronger than it was before the attack.  Strong smells such as paint, some foods, such as beef, and many other smells like tar, can bother me so much that I lose my appetite for food when those smells are present.  Thanks so much for listening.  :)

The videos I have selected for this post are:

7 Strange Restaurants around the World

Hummingbirds - Chirping their Song

French Canadian Meat Pie (Tourtiere) - although this recipe has been served at Christmas time, it is not only a Christmas recipe.

For the following, I am providing the link sources beneath each photo.  You just need to click on the images to see a larger view.

Thank you all so much for visiting me here!  I always enjoy and appreciate reading your kind thoughts, which you are always welcome to share.

  2. I did not know that hummers sang or even chirped. I wonder if they needed a microphone to capture high pitched sounds? I do not eat meat either! On doctors orders. People who do not eat meat live longer and are healthier. In my case, I have had a lot of attacks of diverticulitis, and meat is very hard on your colon. It takes longer to digest than anything else. I know that C,Diff is awful! Did you get it from too many antibiotics?

    Hello Linda,
I have been a vegetarian for ages, never drunk milk, not even as a baby. When I left meet I was 23. Yoghurt is OK. I also eat eggs and cheeses. Seafood will do as well. By the way, I am already 69 young ;)

  5. I only eat beef once in a while. I do experience some slight skin itchiness after consuming beef, but within a few days it will go away. As I grow older, I prefer less meaty diet, because meat tend to be chewy.

  10. I am sure there is a link between the things we eat and our health. I think cutting out beef sounds like a great idea. People generally eat much more meat than they need.
I enjoyed the resto video. I'd never eat suspended from a crane though!

    Do you like fish? :)

  12. Hello Linda, just a quick visit to wish you a lovely week.
I'm sorry to hear about the gout and other illnesses, but thankfully, it has stopped you from eating beef which isn't too good for you anyway. Hope you're feeling better now and enjoying the things you can eat.

As usual, thanks for the pictures and videos, I loved seeing all the unusual restaurants. Especially loved the underwater one!

  14. Hi Linda,
I can't help you with feedback about your health problems, mine were of quite another kind...
Great videos again, many thanks for your kind and faithful comments on my blog :)
    Keep well!

  15. Oh my, Gout is very painful, my husband had it a few times in the past but he's on pills for it now....nothing that he ate set him off....
Nice sayings and a lovely cat there.

  16. Lovely to hear you share your thoughts... I also suffer from diverticulitis and often diverticular pain (apparently caused after a few attacks in the same place which leaves a scar tissue build up). It's a horrible problem to have - when it flares I have constant pain which doesn't ease with painkillers. Weirdly though, like you, my sense of smell is very strong now!

    Hugs

  19. Hi Linda, dietary modifications can be tricky and sometimes the offending foods sneak into recipes in other forms. I never like getting a bout of diarrhea but afterwards welcome the three pound weight loss and like the slimmer feel. A blessing in disguise maybe. LOL Not really good for the gut though so good not to have that happen too often. Thanks for the fun videos and photos. I hope things are good with you and wish you a beautiful week.

  20. Hi Linda, The hummingbird video is great. They are one of my favorite birds. I sure appreciated your comment about New England on my blog. Can you believe I haven't been to New England. I definitely want to see it. Wishing you a good week ahead. John

  21. Hi, Linda! I hope the change in your diet helps. Our bodies are so unique that what is good for one person, tends not to be good for another, and vice versa, of course. We're all human, and yet, our chemistries are so diverse! I hope your health improves each day! Thanks for the great quotes! hugs, de

  23. Two left feet! I guess thats me on the dance floor Linda. Diverticulitis!, started with my wife two or three years ago, well at first they said it was diverticulosis which has now developed into the diverticulitis.
She was over weight but healthy, now she is painfully thin. Vegetables make her worse as does fruit, she is eating less and less but keeps saying there is no treatment. Honestly she would be in better shape if she were to have a colostomy. Sorry, I am rambling on, but she does worry me.

  24. Never had gout, but diverticulitis is awful. The chronic form or state is diverticulosis - got it!

  25. Linda, beef is bad for many reasons. It is one of the causes of gout. I had to give it up completely as I could not digest it from about 4 years ago. I used to get excruciating pain in the lower part of my stomach. My doctor said I should have given it up soon after my gall bladder was removed. The intestines have a hard time expelling the beef as it takes 72 hours to digest beef ! However, pork is OK.

  28. i'm sorry to hear about the severity of your illness last year, but i'm glad that you're doing better now, and i agree that it's OK to leave beef out of your diet, since there are other nutritious forms of protein available. take care, linda :)

  29. Glad you recovered from your recent illness. If beef made me feel sick, I wouldn't eat it either! My son suffers from Crohns and has a restricted diet so I know first-hand how it feels to have food restrictions.

  30. I hope you are well on your way to feeling better for good! I'm not a huge meat person, but I do enjoy a good steak or hamburger now and then. It's probably because I'm low in iron. I guess you could say I'm on the carb diet. Ha ha ha!

  31. Tourtiere is a wonderful meal, particularly in the winter.

The smell of roofing tar is a bad trigger for me- it's nauseous to me, having had spent time working in a roofing factory years ago.

  34. Hello Linda from Montreal!
it’s always wonderful to find new friends around the world on line who share a passion for photography... and in Canada as well...
i have no advice about your gout... but i do know how painful it can be...
i’m 69 years old and enjoy sunsets and natural panoramas the most... but i also enjoy series on travel when my wife Penny and i visit new places... i have a French Canadian upbringing and tortières has been part of our Christmases as long as i can remember...

your third image is my favourite... there is beauty to find in so many ways....

  39. I'm not particularly fond of beef purely because much of it is currently sourced from horrid conditions in industrialized farms, so try not to eat it unless I know its source. My grandparents had gout and tomatoes was their trigger.

  40. "Seek to find beauty amidst the challenges" is a very good thought. Thankfully I've never had much trouble with food, but I do know someone who gets the gout if he eats too much red meat--particularly beef.

  41. I know you are off beef at the moment but I have to say the Canadian pie sounds delicous, now if I could only eat it in one of those unusual restaurants! Good stuff as usual Linda..

  42. Thank you for visiting my blog today, Linda, and leaving your kind comment. I have never had gout but I did have diverticulitis. Seeds, nuts, popcorn all set me off. After trying to heal it without success, I ended up having 12 inches of my colon removed. I did not need a colostomy and there was no Cancer. I have felt fine since the surgery, 4 years ago but I am still careful about what I eat. Good luck and I hope you feel better.

  44. I'm sorry to hear about your condition. I totally understand. It wasn't beef but I experienced similar thing in the past. I got sick and it was traumatic so I have not tried the food ever since. Tomorrow is my blog day and guess what? I will be posting beef dish. I just wanted to say, I enjoy visiting your blog and I think you're great.

  45. Hi Linda! Hope all is well with you. Mr D and I love hummingbirds, I really enjoyed the hummingbird video.

  46. Oh Linda, I'm so sorry for what you've been going through! My husband hasn't wanted beef in many years so I don't cook it and only eat it when I go out to dinner with the girls...lol. I've had diverticulitis...so bad that I wasn't able to attend my Moms wake!! Ever since then I try to be careful on what to eat...however I think stress is a problem for me! Thank you for the laughs...you always make me smile!

  50. An older co-worker of mine told me she has gout. She can barely walk.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh Linda, I really sympathize with your present health problems. I have never personally suffered gout, but have known people who have, so do know how unpleasant it is. I suffer from Lupus, and that also brings on nausea at the smell of many foods, so during an attack I often practically starve...great for the waistline, but not for the rest of me! lol
I also have diverticulitis...beef, eggs and chocolate are a definite no-no at those times. Stress appears to make matters a whole lot worse too.
Not much fun growing older, is it?! ;)
