I am sure that some of us no longer drink soft drinks, or at least not as often as perhaps in earlier days, but I wanted to share some memories in relation to soft drinks and vending machines from days gone by.
Back then, soft drinks were sold in bottles...some bottles were white, others were green. They had different shapes depending on the manufacturer or brand. The bottles were distributed in wooden crates of 6 when delivered to stores. In those days you needed a bottle opener, and there was always a bottle opener built right into the vending machines back then.

As a kid I remember getting the nickel cokes in the green bottle from the pop machine. Another favorite was orange Crush. We didn't get pop too much when I was little. It was too expensive. We always collected and cashed in the pop bottles for our candy money. Now I drink Diet Coke the way others drink coffee or hot tea. Thanks for the memories.

ReplyDeleteI grew up in Finland, and my favourite bottled drink was Omena Limonadi (direct translation: apple lemonade). At the time, it was only available in Eastern Finland (where they originally came up with it), so my grandparents who lived there, would often buy me some when I was there, and they'd even bring me some when they visited us in Helsinki! (We'd bring some back to Helsinki as well, when we visited them..) Nowadays, you can get it anywhere in Finland. It's a bit similar to IRN BRU, which you can get here in Ireland, but IRN BRU is not as nice..
These days, I often drink mixers (without alcohol) - for example, Tesco bitter lemon or Indian tonic water..
I agree, Stella! I find many old things much more beautiful...and in many cases sturdier. That apple lemonade sounds really good. I remember a soft drink from days gone by called Lime Rickey. I suppose it was similar to 7 Up, but had more of a lime punch to it. Sadly, like many great things from back then, it disappeared off the store shelves.
