Office and Technology

I used to work in an office in the 70's to 80's, and back then things were quite different than they are today.  For those of you, like myself, used the technology back in those days, you will be familiar with the photos I am sharing today.  Firstly, the Gestetner copier.  I will do my best to explain this contraption (LOL) as best I can.  I will say that I never liked this machine, as I would often find myself getting ink on my hands whilst using it.  It was a large, rather noisy and clumsy machine that had a place for perforated holes on the be honest, I don't remember much else about it but if any of you do I would enjoy hearing your feedback in the way of comments.  Here is a photo of it.

Back then there were favourite was the IBM Selectric II with the element (or ball).  This was much better than the older models where the keys stuck together when you typed.  As well, I found myself able to type much faster on this machine than on any other typewriter.  Here is a photo to show you what it looked like...and yes, it did come in colours.

Since I spoke of the element (or ball) when I mentioned about this typewriter, I have a photo to share here so that you can all see what it looked like.  There was a little piece on the top of it that you just had to pull upward, and when you put it in, you pushed it down and it snapped into place.  There were different types of elements, as you will see in this photo.

I hope you all enjoyed this office journey down memory lane today.

Thank you all so much for visiting me, and please feel free to comment.

Have a fantastic day, dear friends!

  1. When I started teaching, we had the spirit master to make copies on. That's the one that left your fingers purple and made you feel high if you sniffed it to long. I liked that typewriter too. I always hated typing carbon paper, making a mistake and having to correct the multiple copies. Correction fluid did not come out of clothing easily.

  2. I never worked anywhere with typewriters, but I took typing at school, in mid-80's. I have to boast: I was the fastest in our class, and I never ever made one single mistake =D

I guess that was a good background for typing on the computers, later on.. I'm still fast, and my typing gave me a nickname: Machine Gun :o (I do occasionally make typos, these days, though..)
