Gas Stations...Yesterday and Today

This is a topic that I don't have much memories of, because my parents never owned a car...and I never have, either.  I rely on the public transit system.  My only memories are of the signs and look of the gas stations from days gone by.  Even so, I thought it would be a good topic to share in that I would really enjoy hearing all your memories and thoughts about gas stations...how they were back in the day as compared to now.  Was it better back then (besides the prices) as compared to today?  If so, how?

I am sharing a few photos here of gas stations from the 1940's.

Thank you all so much for visiting me today, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and memories. Please click on the "comments" link at the end of my post to share.

  1. A pleasant fuel station, I don't know the answer.

  2. I worked in a gas station very similar to the last one you posted. It was an Erickson Station in Minneapolis, probably in 1956. Very cold work in the winter, changing oil and tires, etc., outside!

When I was married, gas was 28 cents a gallon!

Thank you for your kind comments today!

  5. Today, we call them "gas stations." Back then, they were called "service stations." You can probably guess why. I remember service stations, but I don't think we have any in my area anymore.

The home I grew up in was parallel to Main St. and I remember gas stations just like these pictured here. I remember gas being around 30 cents per gallon and I also remember back then, they actually serviced your car!

  7. I am looking at the Woolworth's in your header. I have spent many a happy day browsing around one. What I remember of the gas stations...the men would run up to clean your windshield and check your oil. Then after pumping your gas, you would get free knives, or a pretty glass, or Green Stamps. There was NO self serve.
