Old Fashioned Health Remedies

I found some vintage health remedies which I thought I would share here.  If any of you have any old fashioned remedies, I would enjoy hearing them.  Please don't be shy, feel free to share.

I am posting some photos of some old fashioned remedies.  I will say that I personally prefer natural remedies wherever possible.  For example, when I have a cough, I will boil some water and pour it over some fresh, grated or sliced ginger, add juice from half a lemon and a little honey and drink it a few times a day.

Thank you all so much for visiting me here, and please feel free to share your own old fashioned remedies and thoughts by clicking on the "comments" link at the end of my post.

  3. Hi Linda,
I love your Blog! All these wonderful old memories. I still use baking soda to brush my teeth or to put on itchy spots. Seems to work better than some of the modern stuff. I use white vinegar for lots of things also. Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.

  4. I have had a chronic cough that began when I was in grade school. My mother would treat it would this concoction that my grandmother made. I always referred to it as "that pine-tar mess." I'm sure it did not contain either pine or tar, but, it was a thick dark foul tasting stuff. My mother claims to have no memory of either my cough or the foul tasting stuff and I feel her selective memory is because in todays world it would probably get you arrested for child endangerment or worse.

Thanks for the visit to my yellow hopper.

  5. Hi Linda,
I found your blog through your comment on Brenda's blog. Brenda did a lovely and touching tribute to my dearest dog Flora. I am grateful for her kindness.

    Your blog is very interesting!
Love the photo of your header. Just stunning picture!
Wishing you a pleasant week ahead.

  6. When we had a sore throat or cough, my mother would make tea and add a pat of butter to it. The butter would coat our throat and it really did help.

I brush my teeth with a mixture of baking soda and peroxide. Not everyday, but about once or twice a week. It keeps my teeth bright and the peroxide is good for cleansing your gums. My mom taught me that too.

Also, gargling with salt water for a sore throat helps too.

  7. Cocaine toothache drops... Wow! I guess there would be a few arrests if these old remedies were still made. When my aunt died and her estate was being sorted through, I found an old bottle of smelling salts. I kept it and it is still strong to this day.

  8. I've always wondered about those old cocaine & heroin meds, which seem to have been sold without prescription - wouldn't they have caused lots of addictions?!? :o

  9. Thank you all so much for your comments! Valerie, that old bottle of smelling salts sounds nice. Stella, I would think there would have been some addiction with those remedies of cocaine and heroin. I am wondering if they would have even realized it back then.
