Vintage Drugstores

I have to say that with all these large chain drugstores today that sell practically everything, I miss the good old fashioned and personalized customer service of days gone by.  Sure, you have a few still in existence today, but that is it...a few.  Sometimes, although not always, the larger and more popular a store becomes, the less time they make for the customers, and I think this is a big mistake.

Up until the last several years, drugstores were selling cigarettes...however, this stopped when it was mentioned that they were there for the health of the individual.  I have never smoked, so this didn't affect me, but even some smokers I know told me that they thought it was a good thing that the drugstores stopped selling cigarettes, as they were trying to quit smoking.

In the past, the old drugstores had a soda fountain where you could order food or beverages, and it was always fresh and the prices were pretty good.

Here are some photos of vintage drugstores.

Thank you so much for visiting me here, and please feel free to share your memories and thoughts by clicking on the "comments" link at the end of my post.

Wonderful photos you have shared today. I love to shop online at Vermont Country Store. It has many vintage/old-fashioned items still available.

  4. Hi everyone, thanks for your responses. Filip, it seems to have been advertised like that, the sure cure. I laughed when I saw it. :)

  5. I remember these drugstores well. Growing up, I loved to sit at the counter of the soda fountain and have milkshakes. You could also watch them while they cooked your food. I wonder if there are any left like this? Truly gone with the wind....

  6. once in a while we stumble upon an old one, in our travels. a mom and pop operation that has not given in to the commercial chains.

there is one in ocean grove, new jersey that has all the old memorabilia on the walls, a soda fountain counter and some of the old fixtures too!! you would love it!!

  8. Drugstores and soda fountains were unknown over here but I used to read about them and saw them portrayed in films. They seemed to be places where teenagers hung out. I read/watched with envy.

  9. We didn't have drug stores like those, so I don't remember them other than on American movies. We had and still have Chemist shops. For years they only sold drugs and medical stuff but now they sell a variety of items.

  10. big corporations have taken over the small business owner.. we must try to shop and support these special hands on shops over these big corporate bullies.

  11. Hello,
We are a team of cegep students and we are looking for an old-fashioned store, in order to film a few reconstitutional shots for a film. Do you know any place in Montreal or Laval that has kept its old loook? Thank you very much!
