Voting Day in Quebec

I am not sure how many of you follow and/or are aware of Quebec politics, but today is voting day for us.  Thus far it seems that the Parti Quebecois is in the lead.  If they get the power their goal is for sovereignty.  This means that they want to make Quebec a country, separate from the rest of Canada.  Many people don't want this, but there are several hardliners (as they are often called here) who do.

I would be very interested in hearing your feedback and thoughts on this.  To be quite honest, I don't make it a habit to get into political discussions except with very close friends, as (especially here in Quebec) the discussions often turn ugly and there is a lot of anger about the issues.
Do you think separation could be beneficial...or not?

Thank you all so much in advance for your feedback.  I look forward to hearing your thoughts.  Please click on the "comments" link at the end of my post to share.

  1. I can still remember the furore when General de Gaulle, visitng Quebec, bawled from the balcony
    Vive le Quebec libre!

What do the separatists want - apart from forcing people to use only French?

It's a pity immature people and their reactions when asked on what they base their view spoils the chance to discuss politics rationally.

  2. It reminds me of a poem by Edwin Markham:
He drew a circle to shut me out
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout
But love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle and kept him in!
I don't know any of the issues for separation, but it sounds like they want to draw a circle to shut others out!

  4. Ms Sparrow, that is how many people here are feeling. Fly, you pretty much got the picture. They are already implementing pushing the language issue, saying that Quebec is and should stay, French. They keep saying that the French language needs "protection." To be honest I don't understand this, because I feel that people, not an inanimate object, needs protection.

  5. Well, Linda, this is a touchy subject for sure! I traveled through Quebec during the mailbox bombings, and spent a week in Montreal during that period. Work also took me into the rural areas where I met a lot of really good people. Even during this crisis, I had no problems communicating (except in Montreal. I do not speak French as I have no aptitude for languages or music either.

I observed infra structure far better than i saw in other parts of Canada, better roads, better schools and a higher standard of living. I still hear the "We want more" in the news.

Personally, I believe that the province we go into decline if it separates. There will be no more "Equalization" where the province receives more back, than it gives. I don't hear a thing about Quebec accepting it's share of the national debt should it leave. That alone will cause a big time lowering of the standard of living. Also, what about the cost of creating their own money? What about the companies that have headquarters in Montreal that decide to leave, or risk losing business within the rest of Canada?

It seems to me that a county's strength lies in getting bigger , not smaller. The ECM is an example of countries banding together for mutual support. A country that is an island is really leaving itself hanging out.

I hope and pray that common sense prevails today, and that Quebec continues to be a valued asset.

If not, it will be a shame to see it go! I also remember the '80's where the Anglophones left in mass, and the difficulty that Quebec had with the "Brain Drain". It could happen again! I for one would not want to work in that province under the separtists. I would have next to no freedoms.

    For what It's worth!

  7. What England did to the Acadians, and maybe others, was disgusting. Still, it's been so long and the country would be so divided that I doubt if it would benefit even Quebec.

  9. Hello Linda, I don't know too much about your politics and so I thank you for the link as after reading your post you have peaked my curiosity. I have been listening to the news and did know that you were having elections. It sounds like this is very similar to how some Scots would like to be separate from England. I have a good friend who is Scottish and she feels very strongly about this.

  10. I haven't a clue about whether or not Quebec should be a separate country. What is their reason? This discussion has been going on a very long time, as I recall. We have some states in the U.S. that I wish would separate! :-)

Hope you have a wonderful day and a fun weekend.
