Social Networking

Hi everyone!  I was wondering what you all think of social networking, and which, if any, do you use on the web?  Several come to mind, the ones I think of straight away are:  Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, blogging, just to name a few.

So...for myself I can see the positive and negative aspects in these.  And these are my opinions, which I am sharing here.

Positive:  a way to reach out to others, meet new people, make new friends, perhaps even get a job, find family members, old friends, do a family tree.

Negative:  can be addictive, (especially where people play games, such as on Facebook), reputations can be tarnished by gossip.

O.K., so I am certain that many of you can add to the positives and the drawbacks;  the ones I shared here are ones that I am just thinking of off the top of my head;  I am sure there are many more.

So my questions to you all:  which, if any, social networking do you use?  How do you find it useful?

While I am on the topic of social networking, I want to share a link with you all that I found a fascinating read.  Please feel free to share your thoughts on this article, I would very much appreciate hearing what you think.  Please know that by making this post my intention is not to slander any people or websites, it is simply to share my thoughts in a constructive manner and asking for your thoughts.
Why I'm Quitting Facebook

Thank you all so much for visiting me here!  I really appreciate and enjoy reading your thoughts, which you are always welcome to share by clicking on the 'comments' link at the end of my post.

  1. I think many are in the same boat! I email and blog (but no FB, twitter, pinterest etc). I love the sense of connecting to others across the world, but agree that it takes time and energy...which are not always in ready supply every day:)
Thanks so much for dropping in, glad it led me here.

  2. As you know, I blog, but I don't use Twitter or any of the others. I had a Facebook page briefly, for the sole purpose of playing on line Scrabble with a friend, but when they stopped having that app, I closed my account. I understand that Scrabble is back, as "Words & Friends" or something, but I don't like Facebook, and won't be going back. It seemed to be mostly a time waster, and as a poet, I didn't like it when I read the fine print that said anything posted to Facebook became their property. Lastly, I don't want to be "found" by old acquaintances; if wanted to be in contact with them, I already would be. That's my thoughts.

  3. No Social Networking for me. None. And I keep far away from those sites. I tried several times and finally decided it was not worth the time or trouble. And I don't care to have any personal info out in cyberspace. That can be a really bad thing!

Re the post you commented first on tonight. I was going to use that as a theme day post, but I don't like themes and didn't like the picture so deleted it! Sorry about that.

  4. Generally, Facebook is a place for people to talk who don't have anything to say. I've tried using it to bring readers to my blog, but most Facebook people don't read much, especially MY kind of drivel. So, I'm still on Facebook and wondering why.

    1. Hi Gorges, thanks so much for your input. I agree, and it seems to become more and more commercial as time goes on.

  5. I blog, and I'm on FB and Twitter. I'm like the commenter above--I wonder why I'm still on FB. I like finding interesting links, but so much of it is chatter that I could do without. It's really a time waster.

  7. I love blogging best. It can become addictive. I have a FB account mostly to keep in touch with my children who live far away and a few friends who don't blog. I don't use any others. How could you find time to play with all of them?

  8. I have found that Facebook can be a huge time waster. Pretty soon you're having to scan through tons of postings about stuff you aren't interested in.

  9. Hi Linda, I am one who not only loves blogging --but has enjoyed Facebook. I haven't had any trouble at all--and enjoy my group of friends. In fact, through Facebook, I caught up with friends from the past --and that is awesome.

I don't have trouble with games since I block them out--and I haven't had any trouble with my group of friends. I do not friend someone on FB unless I know them personally --or through blogging. It works for me.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  10. Dear Linda,
Thank you for visiting my blog. I do enjoy blogging every so often and will seldom spend time on face book. I can see you have a beautiful blog yourself.

  11. Hi, Linda! I am still enjoying Facebook as a means to stay current on news & pictures from children & grandchildren. I also like being able to reach out to old school friends & keep up to date with them & their growing families & trips. An old friend is currently in the hospital & contact with anyone carrying colds or viruses would be very bad for her at this time, but we get to visit through Facebook & her new phone. Nothing about the life I lead is worth keeping a secret, so if "Big Brother" knows my business, I can't say that I mind, since I don't have anything to hide. I ignore the game requests & send cute pictures to friends instead of sending greeting cards.
    Take care of your health!
    Much love,
    Kim

  12. For me social networking is a combination of blogging, facebook, google+, and some photo sharing sites. Just love it but it takes time.

    Greetings,
    Filip

  16. Thanks for stopping by to visit me at my blog a little while back. I found the article you linked to about FB very interesting. I disconnected my FB account about two years ago...it was not for me. To answer your question about social media...I blog, and that is it. One online activity is enough (sometimes too much) for me. I have enjoyed getting to know a few people through that means...it must fit into my life for the good, however, and when I need a break, I take one. What a blessing to know that we don't have to be engaged online 24/7 as so many would like us to believe. There's more to life than that! :)

    Blessings to you!
    Camille

  17. I only use Blogger now. You can waste so much time on these things and yes I think some people can get addicted.

They also get carried away forgetting that what they say can be monitored & lead to prosecution as in the recent cases brought by Lord McAlpine who was wrongly accused of being a paedophile on Twitter.

I cancelled my Facebook account a long time ago. I agree with the article in your link. Facebook is getting out of hand & people put themselves at risk posting so much of their private lives & thoughts online. They don't seem to think before they post.

Please do not be shy! I appreciate your kind comments, they are sweet treasures and really make my day! Spammers, do not waste your time, I delete your comments and they do not even show on my blog. Comment moderation is enabled. I do hope that Blogger's changes in the way of proving that you are not a robot do not deter you from commenting! Thank you so much! If you have Google+ and are only allowing Google+ users to comment on your blog, I do not have, nor do I want it. And if you use DISQUS for accepting comments on your blog I don't have that, either, nor do I want it. Thanks!
