Television...Days Gone By

For those of us who grew up in the 1960's or earlier, we most likely remember how television was back then...a far cry from what it is today.  For one thing, we had to get up to change the channels.  LOL!  There were no remotes back then.  Then we had the buttons such as the vertical and horizontal.  I remember having to adjust the vertical on several occasions.  We also had "snow" on our televisions from time to time.  The snow was just a bad view, making the picture unclear and fuzzy.  We also had the antenna, which was often called "rabbit ears".  The televisions back then were made of wood and were sturdy and attractive.

In those days, television stations shut down for the night and displayed a logo with a beep sound, showing that there was no programming.

Here is a photo of a 1950's Admiral "full" television.  Of course, not all televisions were this large back then, but this photo is just to give you an idea of how televisions looked back in the 50's and 60's.
Television was all black and white in those days, there was no colour.

I spoke earlier in this post about the "snow" and the rabbit ears.  Here is a photo to show you what I meant.
As you can see there is no picture on the screen.  This is what we referred to as "snow", as it took away the picture.  This often happened in bad weather.  You can also see the antenna or rabbit ears on the top of the television.

Another thing I recall is that television ads/commercials were longer back then;  however, the actual commercial break was about 2 minutes or less, as opposed to the 4 minutes it is now.

  2. Back then all TVs should like anything but TVS. Now they look like a painting on a wall.

  3. I was born in 1962, but do have some memories of the TV then, so your posting made me smile and think how simple it all was then.

    Kind regards Jo
